Open-Label — What It Means in Clinical Trials
Plain English Definition
In an open-label trial, everyone knows exactly which treatment each participant is receiving — both you and the research team. There is no blinding. These studies are common when blinding is impossible, such as when comparing surgery to medication.
Why It Matters
If a trial is open-label, you will know what you are receiving, which can be reassuring. However, this means results may be influenced by expectations, so the findings may be viewed with more caution by regulators.
Example
A listing might say: "Open-label, single-arm study of Drug Y." This means every participant receives Drug Y and everyone knows it.
