Exclusion Criteria — What It Means in Clinical Trials

Plain English Definition

Exclusion criteria are conditions or circumstances that prevent you from joining a trial. These exist to protect your safety — for example, excluding people with heart problems from a drug that might affect the heart. If any exclusion criterion applies to you, you cannot participate.

Why It Matters

Exclusion criteria are there for your protection, not to be unfair. Common exclusions include pregnancy, certain organ problems, or having recently taken specific medications. Always check these before getting your hopes up about a trial.

Example

A listing might say: "Exclusion: active brain metastases, uncontrolled diabetes, current use of blood thinners, or pregnancy."
