Dose Escalation — What It Means in Clinical Trials
Plain English Definition
In a dose-escalation study, researchers start with a very low dose of the drug and gradually increase it in small groups of participants. Each new group receives a slightly higher dose, but only after the previous group has been monitored for safety. This is how researchers find the right dose.
Why It Matters
If you join a dose-escalation trial, you may receive a very low dose that might not be effective, or you could be in a later group that receives a higher dose. The primary goal is finding safe dosing, not proving the drug works.
Example
You might see: "3+3 dose escalation design starting at 10mg, escalating to 20mg, 40mg, and 80mg." The first three patients get 10mg, and if it is safe, the next three get 20mg, and so on.
