Crossover — What It Means in Clinical Trials

Plain English Definition

In a crossover trial, you receive one treatment for a set period and then switch to the other treatment. This means every participant eventually tries both the new drug and the comparator (or placebo). There is usually a "washout" break between the two periods to clear the first drug from your body.

Why It Matters

Crossover designs are good news for participants because you are guaranteed to receive the active treatment at some point during the study, rather than potentially only getting a placebo.

Example

A listing may say: "Crossover design — participants will receive Treatment A for 12 weeks, followed by a 2-week washout, then Treatment B for 12 weeks."
