Assent — What It Means in Clinical Trials

Plain English Definition

Assent is agreement from a child or young teenager to participate in a clinical trial. Because minors cannot legally give informed consent, a parent or guardian provides consent on their behalf. However, the child's own agreement (assent) is also sought when they are old enough to understand — typically around age 7 and older.

Why It Matters

If your child is being considered for a trial, their feelings matter. Researchers will explain the study to your child at their level and respect their wishes. A child who does not want to participate should not be forced.

Example

A pediatric trial listing might say: "Parental consent and child assent (ages 7-17) required." Both the parent and child must agree before enrollment.
